Hans - Martin Scholder was born in Baden Württemberg. He first studied scenography, stage design, painting and philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart - with Prof. Jürgen Rose - later expanding his studies in the areas of directing and dramaturgy and he assisted Jürgen Rose and Robert Wilson at the Salzburger Festspiele and the Schaubühne in Berlin. He then spent a year in the USA. He has worked as an independent scenographer and stage designer since 1989 across Europe, working with artists such as Peter Stein, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Cesare Lievi, Klaus Michael Grüber, Andrea Breth, John Neumeier, Ivan Liska, Renate Ackermann, Helmuth Matiasek, Robert Wilson, Thomas Langhoff, Ingo Metzmacher, Marc Albrecht, Adam Fischer, Detlev Glarnert, Friedrich Meyer-Oertel, Verena Weiss, Konstanze Lauterbach, Ismael Ivo, Thomas Hampson, Francisco Araiza, Wolfgang Brendel, Agnes Baltsa, Anja Silia, Inga Nielsen and Ruggero Raimondi among others. He has carried out scenography for works including Verdi's "DON CARLO" at the Zürich Opera, Massenet's "MANON" at the National Opera in Munich, Puccini's "TOSCA" at the Rhine Opera in Strasbourg, and for "MOSES and AARON", "TRISTAN and ISOLDE", "FRAU ohne SCHATTEN", "FREISCHÜTZ ", "SALOME", "ELECTRA", "MAC BATH", "DON GIOVANNI", "WOZZECK", "DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE" at theatres and opera houses in Leipzig, Darmstadt, Munich State Opera, Stuttgart Opera, Zürich Opera, Mannheim Opera, Dortmund Opera, Bremen Theatre, Luzern Theatre, Modena Opera, Piacenca Opera, Oper, Ferrara, Aspendos Opera (Turkey), Hamburg State Opera, Stockholm Royal Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Schaubühne Berlin and the Machat Theatre in Moscow. He also designed facilities for ballets for John Neumeier in Hamburg and also ballets choreographed by George Balachine at the Bavarian State Opera. Scholder also directs various operas and plays. In Bozen and Rovigo (Italy) he staged Johann Sebastian Bach’s Oratorium "ST. MATTHEW'S PASSION". At the Bremen Theatre he created scenography for the play, "Die Amazonen", in Osnabrück for the dance theatre, "Schönbergs Verklärte Nacht" and for the Luzern Theatre for the premier of "Die Metamorphosen des Ovid" with choreography by Verena Weiss. 2006/7 he staged the opera, "BRUNDIBAR" by H. Krasa, among others, at the School of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt.

He is currently working on scenography for the opera, "SALOME", by Richard Strauss directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff, at the Opera Festspiele in Baden-Baden 2011. In addition to his work as a teacher and lecturer at schools and technical universities, he has staged various works and organised workshops and performance projects with pupils and students.
